DHANBAD DISTRICT OVERVIEW:
| The Dhanbad district is situated in the state of Jharkhand and lies between 23o37'3" N and 24o4' N latitude and between 86o6'30" E and 86o50' E longitude. The district covers an area of 2509.5 sq. km. with total population of 19,49,526 (1991). |
| Originally the name of Dhanbad was DHANBAID which seems to have been derived from the word Dhan (Paddy) and baid i.e. the paddy land. The Dhanbad originated from the district of Manbhum occupied by Mundari or Kolarian races in the wilderness of South undivided Bihar. In the seventh century A.D. some information is available from the account of the travels of Hieun Tsang. These accounts narrate existences of a powerful kingdom which comprised the district and adjoining areas, ruled by Sasanka. |
| Administrative set-up of the district includes eight (8) development blocks, twelve (12) police stations and 1370 villages. Dhanbad , Jharia, Katras, Sindri, Gomoh, Gobindpur, Baliapur, Nirsa, Kumardubi, Chirkunda, Dumarkunda, Panchet and Mython are the urban centre of the district. |
| Dhanbad district forms a part of Chhotanagpur plateau and has two physical divisions - Southern and Northern. The landscape of the southern portion is the area of the isolated hills and villages. The natural slope of the district have an easterly and southeasterly direction. The district drained by the rivers Damodar, Barakar, Khudia and Katri Nadi. |
| The geological formations of the Dhanbad district are composed of crystalline rocks which belong to the Dhanwar system (Archeans) and southern half is occupied by great coal basin of Jharia. Major rock groups are sandstone shale, limestone and gneiss, coal , fireclay and china clay. |
| The soils of the district have two broad categories - alfisols and ultisols comprising red sandy soils and red and yellow soils. The former is found in North-Western part mainly in forest areas and later in the remaining portion of the district. |
| The climate of the district is tropical in nature and experiences hot summer with dry and cold winter. The mean maximum and minimum temperature is 310 C and 200C respectively. The average annual rain fall is 1309 mm. Relative humidity is high throughout the year. |
| The Dhanbad district has 71127.88 ha of agriculture land. Irrigated area is only 5156.28 ha. Major crop the district is Paddy and other crops are wheat, Pulses and vegetables etc. Forest area is about 17728.29 ha. |
| The District has extraordinary importance because of its mobilisation of local resource bases. The dominant industry of the district is based on coal which has attracted a concentration of numerous other industries. The high grade metallurgical coal of the Jharia coalfield within the district feeds most of the existing steel plants of the country. The rich varieties of by-products of coal from these coal plants have provided necessary raw materials of for the developments of chemical industries in the country as well. Next in importance among the industries are the fertilizer and chemical at Sindri. Other industries are ceramic, iron and steel, engineering and other ancillary industries. Agriculture and industries are the main economic activities of the people. |
| Coal and allied industries are the important parameters for determining the economic trends of the district and deserve special attention for planned growth of its resources. |
