1.Urban Risk Reduction: Inaugural Training Workshop : Inaugural Training Workshop Urban Risk Reduction project has been launched in Dhanbad with the Inaugral Training Workshop for Officials of District Administration, Officers of Dhanbad Municipal Corporation and Elected Representatives from Dhanbad Municipal Corporation.  


The first workshop on Urban Risk Reduction Project in Dhanbad, Jharkhand was held on 28th May 2011 at District Rural Development Authority Conference Hall, Combined Building, Dhanbad. The workshop was organized for the district administration officials and elected body of Dhanbad Municipal Corporation.

The main objective of the URR workshop were as following : -

1.    To inaugurate the urban risk reduction project in Dhanbad;

2.    Sensitization of Dhanabad Municipal Corporation, Concerned Departments, Expert Institution, Local Expert, Premier NGOs, Media on GoI – UNDP sponsored Urban Risk Reduction Project; &

3.    Contextualization and Reconstruction of Disaster Management Project – in terms of Urban Risk Reduction Project.




The workshop was attended by as many as 65 participants like Officials of District Administration & Dhanbad Municipal Corporation, Elected Representatives of Dhanbad Municipal Corporation, NGOs representatives, Media Persons, etc. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sunil Kr. Barnwal, Deputy Commissioner, Dhanbad and Chief Guest of the programme by lighting the inaugural lamp. Auspicious presence of Chief Guest Mr. Barnawal, Deputy Commissioner, Dhanbad and Special Guest Mr. R. K. Dhan, Superintendent of Police, Dhanbad made the programme more meaningful & relevant as they shared important information on district level urban risk reduction topic and motivated participants to act proactively in their respective area in developing URR plans. Mr. Nitish Sinha, SPO, Dept. of Disaster Management, GoJ, Col. Sanjay Srivastava, DM Expert, GoJ, Smt. Subha Kiran, Environment Officer, Dhanbad Municipal Corporation and Mr. Amit Shekhar, PSA, UNDP – Dhanbad were distinguish speaker in the training programme.

2. Orientation Programme for Selected Volunteers on Ward Level Planning : The District Administration, Dhanbad has selected four volunteers for providing full time paid services in preparation of City Plan. Orientation Programme for selected Volunteer was held by PSA Mr. Amit Shekhar on 29-30 July 2011 through which knowledge on Mapping Exercise, Survey Format and community participation was shared. Volunteers also practiced Social Map, Resource Map, Hazard & Vulnerability Map during the orientation programme and their queries were answered.


3. City level URR Planning : : Mapping and Planning exercise in 33 wards under Dhanbad Municipal Corporation have been completed and following activities carried out in these wards–

i. Social Mapping, Resource Mapping, Hazard & Vulnerability Mapping have been completed in all 33 wards.

ii. Disaster Management Committees formed in 31 wards and DM community groups like Rescue & Relief team, Food & Shelter Team, Trauma Counseling Team, First Aid teams, etc formed in respective wards.

iii. Survey format filled up and information collected.

4. School Safety Programme in Dhanbad :

The District Administration, Dhanbad has instructed School Administration/Principal of all schools in Dhanbad district through an office order on 10th October 2011 to strictly abide to the Hon’ble Supreme Court Judgment on April 13, 2009 on WP(Civil) no. 483 of 2004 on School Safety Measures. The Office of District Education Officer (DEO) and District Superintendent of Education (DSE) have been instructed to ensure compliance of Supreme Court Order in all Government and Private School. A Guideline has been also disseminated to the schools in this regard with instruction to submit “Compliance report” and “School Safety Plan” within 15 days.  


5. Awareness Programmes in the District :

Awareness programmes have been organized at different levels. Material like pamphlets, banners, media (newspapers), NDRF teams mock drills at block office level, ward level discussions and screening of documentary films on disasters management organized. For school students, painting and speech competition on themes of disaster risk reduction organized on Independence day in 2011.  


6. Master Trainers on Disaster Management :

Selection and training of two Master trainer from Dhanbad conducted in order to build a cadre of trained volunteers on disaster management in the district. The training was organized by Disaster Management Department, GoJ and UNDP during 26-28 December 2011 in Ranchi.  


7. FAMEX exercise of NDRF in Dhanbad :

In order to familiarize the National Disaster Response Force with type of hazards, institutions, locations, terrain and disaster management set up in various locations in the region, FAMEX is organized for the NDRF team. FAMEX of 2nd Battalion of NDRF based at Kolkata comprising around 35 members was organized in Dhanbad from 25th July to 30th May 2011. The following programme were organized for NDRF team during FAMEX 2011 –

Day 1.   Meeting with District Administration Officials -     25th June 2011 (Saturday)

Day 2.   Visit to Open Cast/Underground Coal Mine -         27th June 2011 (Monday)

             Visit to ISM/Meeting & Campus Visit -                  27th June 2011 (Monday)

Day 3.   Visit to Nirsa and Baliapur blocks -                          28th June 2011 (Tuesday)

Day 4.   Visit to Jharia and Baghmara blocks -                  29th June 2011 (Wednesday)

Day 5.   Visit to Topchanchi Block -                                       30th June 2011 (Thursday)
